What is Smart Glass / Switchable Glass​?

Smart glass, also known as switchable glass, is a type of glass whose light transmission properties can be altered when voltage, light, or heat is applied. It transitions from clear to opaque or tinted, providing privacy, glare reduction, and energy efficiency. This technology typically uses liquid crystals, suspended particle devices (SPDs), or electrochromic coatings to achieve these changes. Applications include architectural windows, skylights, vehicle windows, and electronic displays. By controlling the transparency, smart glass enhances comfort, reduces cooling and heating costs, and adapts to varying light conditions, contributing to smart building and vehicle design.

 

 

When we apply the electromagnetic field at transparent conductive films, it forces liquid crystals to align in one direction and resultant light start passing through the glass or we can say glass becomes clear.

In the absence of the electromagnetic field, the liquid crystals become random and distort the passing light, resultant glass becomes opaque.
